Explaining Matthew 4:12-23 to Children and Offering Ways to Tell Others About Jesus in Everyday Life

The Bible is full of wonderful stories that teach us about God’s love for all people. One of these stories is found in Matthew 4:12-23, where Jesus calls his first disciples Peter and Andrew. In this passage, Jesus encourages them to become “fishers of men” which has become a popular phrase that often refers to bringing others closer to God by spreading the good news of Jesus Christ.

When talking about this passage to children, it is important to keep the language simple yet meaningful. Explaining what a “fisherman of men” means can be done in a few sentences. Something like, “a fisherman catches fish with their nets while a fisher of men brings others closer together so they can experience God’s love through Jesus. We are all called by Jesus to tell others about Him but we get to choose how we do it.”

It is also beneficial to provide practical examples of ways children can talk about Jesus with other people in everyday life. For instance, young kids may start off simply by praying before meals or speaking kind words towards people they meet. As they get older they may gain more confidence in discussing spiritual topics such as why believing in Jesus makes them feel happy or how forgiveness works into our daily lives.

In addition to finding ways for children to share the gospel with others, encourage them remind themselves about God’s love every day through scripture reading or participating in activities like going on mission trips or volunteering at their local church. Small things like these will help keep one’s faith alive and will make it easier for them when discussing spiritual matters with family and friends.

At its core, being a “fisherman of men” means witnessing for God’s kingdom here on earth; whether big or small, each person has something useful they can do with their unique skillset and talents! By fulfilling His calling and spreading His word throughout the world, we can bring glory and honor back unto Him no matter our age.
