This statement can be interpreted in many ways, but what it boils down to is that Jesus was asking them to use their existing skillset as fishermen—namely catching fish—as a way into spreading his message. He wanted them to use whatever resources they had at their disposal in order to benefit his cause. In other words, he was telling them that if they could catch fish as well as bring people closer together through conversation then why not use this talent for something greater?
