The Empty Tomb

The morning sun began to paint the sky with streaks of gold as Mary Magdalene and the other women approached the tomb. They had come to pay their respects to Jesus, to anoint his body with spices. But their hearts sank as they realized that the massive stone that sealed the entrance had been rolled away. With trembling steps, they entered the tomb, only to find it empty. Confusion mingled with grief, as they tried to make sense of this bewildering scene.

Scripture Reading:
Mark 16:1-6 (NIV)
“When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so that they might go to anoint Jesus’ body. Very early on the first day of the week, just after sunrise, they were on their way to the tomb and they asked each other, ‘Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb?’ But when they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had been rolled away. As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed. ‘Don’t be alarmed,’ he said. ‘You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him.'”

The Disciples’ Doubt

While the news of Jesus’ resurrection spread among the disciples, not all of them were quick to believe. Doubt lingered within some hearts, as they struggled to comprehend what had transpired. They had witnessed Jesus’ crucifixion and death, and now the idea of his triumphant return seemed almost too good to be true.

In the midst of their doubt, Jesus suddenly appeared among them, reassuring them of his resurrected state. He greeted them with peace and showed them his hands and side, bearing the scars of his crucifixion. The disciples were filled with joy and astonishment, as they grasped the reality of Jesus’ victory over death. This encounter would mark the beginning of their journey to turn their doubt into unshakable faith.

Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene

Mary Magdalene had been a devoted follower of Jesus. She had witnessed his teachings, his miracles, and the profound impact he had on the people around him. But when Jesus was crucified, Mary’s heart was filled with grief and sorrow. She couldn’t bear the thought of her beloved teacher being gone forever.

On that early Sunday morning, Mary went to the tomb where Jesus had been buried. To her surprise, she found the stone rolled away and the tomb empty. Thomas’ Doubt

One of the most well-known stories from the Bible is about a disciple named Thomas and his doubt. After Jesus rose from the dead, he appeared to the other disciples. But Thomas was not there with them at the time. When the disciples told Thomas that they had seen the Lord, he struggled to believe their words. He said, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.”

But Jesus, being full of grace and understanding, knew the doubts in Thomas’s heart. A week later, he appeared again to the disciples, and this time Thomas was there. Jesus directly addressed Thomas and invited him to touch his wounds, saying, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.” In that moment, Thomas’s doubt was replaced with faith. He exclaimed, “My Lord and my God!” It was a powerful lesson for Thomas and for all of us, that even in our moments of doubt, Jesus is patient, loving, and ready to reveal himself to us.

The Great Commission

In the moments leading up to Jesus’ ascension into heaven, he gathered his disciples together for one last time. As they stood on the mountain, Jesus shared with them a powerful message known as The Great Commission. He explained to his followers that they were to go out into the world and make disciples of all nations. This meant spreading the good news of Jesus’ love and sacrifice to every corner of the earth.

Jesus knew that his time on earth was ending, but his mission was far from over. He wanted his disciples to continue his work and share his teachings with others. He gave them the responsibility to baptize new believers and teach them everything that he had taught them. This was a monumental task, but Jesus assured his disciples that they wouldn’t be alone. He promised to be with them always, even until the end of the age. With these words, Jesus entrusted his followers with a mission that would impact countless lives for generations to come.

Jesus Ascends to Heaven

After His resurrection, Jesus spent forty days appearing to His disciples and teaching them about the kingdom of God. During one of these appearances, Jesus led His disciples to a mountain, where He delivered His final instructions. As they gathered around Him, Jesus assured them of His authority and promised to send the Holy Spirit to empower them for the mission ahead.

With anticipation and awe, the disciples watched as Jesus slowly began to rise into the sky. Their eyes fixed on Him, they could hardly believe what they were witnessing. Suddenly, two angels appeared beside them and reminded the disciples that Jesus would one day return in the same way He had left. Filled with joy and conviction, the disciples returned to Jerusalem, ready to carry out the Great Commission that Jesus had entrusted to them.
