The parable of salt and light is found in Matthew 5:13-20 and is one of Jesus’ most important and oft quoted teachings. In verse 14 Jesus then tells us that as believers, we must also be lights; leading people away from darkness towards His path. Our task is not only to share His teachings with others but to live them out ourselves; behaving and acting according to the Gospel, so that others might see Christ in us. What other duties are associated with the parable of salt and light? Firstly, if we are going to add flavor or healing – like what salt achieves – then we should act out of unconditional love rather than seeking attention or gain. Each time we dare to go against popular opinion for something more noble or just, we shine a light on ourselves as people who stand for righteousness. We may choose not to call attention to our own good deeds but by doing them humbly before God, others will recognize our efforts nevertheless (Matthew 6:16-18). Finally, perhaps one of the most important takeaways from this parable is for us to love one another just as Christ has first loved us (Verse 19). Love isn’t something that requires grand gestures nor is it exclusive only for those near enough in proximity; rather it’s separate from any kind of prejudice or partiality our hearts can stir up (Galatians 5:22-23). It’s simply doing everyday small acts even though they might cost time or money because by doing so we show others kindness too!
