When Jesus saw His mother and the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He said to His mother, “Woman, here is your son.” Then He said to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” So from that hour, this disciple took her into his home. (John 19:26-27)
What Jesus Said
Jesus spoke two short sentences. To his mother, he said, “Woman, here is your son,” pointing to the disciple standing beside her. To that disciple, he said, “Here is your mother.” From that hour, the disciple took Mary into his own home.
What the Words Mean
In his final hours, Jesus made provision for his mother’s care, entrusting her to the disciple’s household. The passage does not record Jesus promising Mary they would be together in heaven or describing his feelings toward her; it records a brief, practical act of care carried out in the middle of his suffering.
Why He Called Her “Woman”
Jesus also addressed Mary as “Woman” earlier, at the wedding in Cana: “Woman, what is that to you and to Me? My hour has not yet come” (John 2:4). It was a respectful form of address in that culture, not a term of distance.
Summary
From the cross, Jesus’ words to Mary were an act of care: he asked the disciple he loved to take her as his own mother, and the disciple did so from that hour.
