In today’s world, it is not uncommon for individuals to experience intense periods of anger. This emotion can be described as highly intense, explosive and consuming. When these feelings boil up to an extreme level, it can have a substantial negative impact on the individual’s life. Fortunately, there are several tactics that you can use to help stop your anger from blowing up.
Take Time for Self-Care
When we become overwhelmed with angry emotions, taking time for ourselves allows us to step back from the situation and gain perspective. Some helpful self-care activities include: engaging in calming activities such as yoga or meditation; going for a walk in nature; making art or writing down your thoughts; listening to soothing music; taking deep breaths and intentionally slowing down your breathing; and talking with a trusted friend or counselor. Taking care of ourselves helps us feel supported and connected so that our anger can dissipate more easily without leading us down destructive paths of aggression.
Practice Mindfulness
Mindfulness means observing whatever is happening in the present moment without judgement or attachment. During times of heightened anger, mindfulness practices such as body scans, visualization exercises and mindful breathing allow us to connect with our sensations instead of getting caught up in angry thoughts and rumination. With regular practice, mindfulness can offer relief from excessive emotions by helping us maintain emotional balance during moments when we feel triggered or overwhelmed by angry feelings.
Use Positive Self-Talk
Although it may seem silly at first, positive self-talk can be an effective way to counteract negative thinking patterns that often arise during moments of strongly felt anger. Rather than focusing on all the things that are wrong in the situation, talk yourself through what is going right or what could potentially go right after this difficult period passes or beginning to view the situation from a different angle with compassion towards yourself first and then those around you who may have contributed to the feeling of anger being experienced. Reassuring yourself that you are capable of calming down will encourage you to focus on finding solutions to move past the intensity of your emotion rather than letting it control your actions further down the road.
Ask For Help If Needed
Sometimes, no matter how hard we try, there may come moments when we need additional guidance when dealing with overwhelming angry emotions – especially if it becomes too overwhelming alone or threatens our wellbeing in any shape or form either inwardly directed at oneself or externally projected into our environment (e.g., lashing out). It is important to reach out for support whether this involves speaking with close friends/family members or seeking out professional resources such as therapy so that one can process their feelings safely and productively over time period until they are able better manage their reactions towards certain situations which spark their rage in more healthy ways going forth into the future
