Reading the Bible with children can be an enjoyable and rewarding experience. It can help children make sense of the world around them, understand the values that they hold dear, and grow in their faith. But it can also be overwhelming to know where to start. Here are some tips on how to read the Bible with kids:
- Find appropriate level materials – Look for versions of the Bible that are written in language that is easy for kids to understand. You should also look for materials that have questions or activities throughout that guide conversations about what’s being read.
- Introduce stories through scripture – Rather than beginning with a word-for-word reading of a text, begin by telling stories from scripture. This allows your child to become familiar with characters and narratives before delving into more intricate details like grammar and syntax.
- Take time to explore & ask questions – Use every opportunity to dive deeper into understanding the story being told in each bible passage. Ask your child questions about what’s happening in the story and what it means for us today, then take time pause after each answer so you can discuss possible answers together and thereby increase comprehension of events or concepts being communicated by the scripture passage.
- Read through different translations – Different bible versions explain passages differently or may even use a completely different language than other versions do, so it’s important to give children exposure to several translations so they get an understanding of how things are expressed differently across various texts.
- Make connections between stories & life experiences– As you discuss scriptures with your child, find ways to connect it back to their everyday life – this will help them remember what they’re learning better and give them greater insight into their faith as well as understanding of their own actions, thoughts, feelings, and beliefs!
