Enzo does not appear anywhere in the Bible. The name occurs in none of the 31,086 verses of the Berean Standard Bible, in any spelling, and there is no Hebrew, Greek or Latin name behind it in scripture. Enzo is an Italian name. What the name Enzo actually means
The reference works do not agree with each other, and the single settled meaning printed on most baby-name pages is one guess among several. Behind the Name calls the origin uncertain and sets out three possibilities.
- An old Italian form of Heinz. Heinz is a German short form of Heinrich, which is built from Germanic roots meaning home and ruler. That is where the widely copied gloss, ruler of the home, comes from.
- A variant of the Germanic name Anzo. Behind the Name traces Anzo to an Old German element meaning giant. This line has nothing to do with home or with ruling.
- A short form of a longer Italian name. Vincenzo, Lorenzo, Innocenzo and Fiorenzo all end in the same syllable, and Enzo is clipped from them.
The Heinz line has the firmest historical anchor. Treccani, the Italian national encyclopedia, records that Enzo, king of Sardinia and son of the emperor Frederick II, was born around 1220 and died in Bologna in 1272, and that Italians called him Enzo from Heinz, the diminutive of Heinrich. That is around eleven centuries after the last book of the Bible was written.
Does a name have to be in the Bible?
No. Scripture gives no list of approved names, and it never treats the origin of a name as a problem. What it does say about a name is about reputation.

The clearest case is a name the Bible itself identifies as a pagan god. At Lystra the crowd mistook Paul and Barnabas for gods.

Writing later to the church at Rome, Paul greets a Christian who carries that god’s name, and passes no comment on it.
Greet Asyncritus, Phlegon, Hermes, Patrobas, Hermas, and the brothers with them.
The same chapter commends Phoebe, a servant of the church in Cenchrea (Romans 16:1). Phoibe was a Titan of Greek myth and an epithet of the goddess Artemis. Neither person was asked to change a name, and neither name is treated as a difficulty. A name with no scriptural origin is not a scriptural problem.
Why the name is everywhere right now
Enzo has climbed fast in the English-speaking world. Behind the Name’s chart of United States rankings puts it at number 871 in 2003 and inside the top 100 every year from 2023. The best-known bearer is Enzo Ferrari, the Modena industrialist and racing driver who lived from 1898 to 1988 and founded the car company that carries his name. The name is also widely known from characters in modern fiction and from footballers. None of that has any link to scripture, and no source claims one.

- Enoch is Hebrew and appears 12 times. In Genesis 5:24 he walks with God and is taken away.
- Enosh is Hebrew and appears 8 times. He is the son of Seth in Genesis 4:26.
- Aeneas is Greek and appears twice, in Acts 9:33 and Acts 9:34, as the paralysed man Peter healed at Lydda.
