What does God say to do when someone hurts you?

The Bible has many passages that offer guidance on how to respond to being hurt by others. Here are a few examples:

  • “But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you” (Matthew 5:44). This verse reminds us that even when we are hurt by others, we are called to love and pray for them. This does not mean that we should allow ourselves to be mistreated, but rather that we should seek to overcome evil with good and to show compassion and forgiveness towards those who have hurt us.
  • “Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone” (Romans 12:17-18). This verse reminds us that we should not seek revenge or repay evil with evil when we are hurt by others. Instead, we should strive to do what is right and to seek peace with others.
  • “Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you” (Colossians 3:13). This verse reminds us that we should be patient and forgiving towards those who have hurt us. We should forgive as we have been forgiven by God.
  • “See that no one repays anyone evil for evil, but always seek to do good to one another and to everyone” (1 Thessalonians 5:15). This verse reminds us that we should not seek to harm those who have hurt us, but rather to do good to them and to others.

I hope these verses are helpful. If you want to explore the topic of responding to being hurt by others further in the Bible, I would encourage you to read through the books of Matthew, Romans, Colossians, and 1 Thessalonians, as they contain many passages that address this issue.
