What Are the Five Areas of Ministry?
The phrase traces back to Ephesians 4:11-13, where Paul describes five kinds of leaders Christ gave to the church to build it up:
11 And it was He who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, 12 to equip the saints for works of ministry and to build up the body of Christ, 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God, as we mature to the full measure of the stature of Christ. Read this way, the five areas of ministry are apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers. Their shared purpose, the passage says, is to equip believers for works of ministry and build up the church.
A Note on Other Lists
Outside of this passage, "areas of ministry" is also used loosely for practical church activities such as preaching, teaching, worship, service, and fellowship. Different churches and writers group these differently, and there is no single official list beyond Ephesians 4.
